Decorating Tacoma

Growing up in the north end of Tacoma, we lived in a home that was built in 1916 and had lots of attic space and boy, did my mom have that space full. My mom always decorated our house for each holiday without fail. As a child my job was to help with the decorating. Whether it was Christmas, Halloween, Easter or Presidents Day; my mom had tons of decorations. I would imagine she bought several of those decorations at the Proctor Dime Store, Sears or Woolworth’s as those are the stores we shopped at. Especially at Christmas my mom had decorations everywhere. A big tree in the living room, snowmen in the kitchen, a large plastic Santa, garland, bells, candles, nativity set on the dining room table and fake snow sprayed on the windows. I remember my grandmother commenting that my mother even decorated the bathroom. What fond memories. You can imagine I love to decorate also.

After visiting friends at two separate Christmas parties this weekend, I told my husband I think most people “put things out” and I “really decorate”. I mean really decorate! Christmas tree in the living room, teddy bears dressed like Santa on the stairs, elves hanging in the window, reindeer in the kitchen, bells, a Christmas tea set and nativity scene on the dining room table. Stockings handing from the mantel, Christ’s crib on the coffee table, Christmas tablecloth, teddy bear Christmas tree, Christmas towels, candles and toy soldiers. Though I don’t have fake snow in the windows, you can be assured I have even decorated the bathroom.

Oh, my gosh, Patty, you just described my childhood home, my mother, and our decorations nearly to the letter!

One time I attended a party at a home in Brown's point where they had SEVEN Christmas trees. Every picture on the wall, bears and books on the stais, clocks on the wall--all Christmas stuf. It was amazing. They started decorating right after Halloween and left it up until Valentine's. They had a whole room just to keep their decorations in.

We do pretty well because our daughter-in-law loves to do it, bless her.

I want to see pictures!

I do have hand towels with Christmas trees for the bathroom...does that count?

As a kid, I spent most of my Christmases in the tropics...and, for our first Christmas in Canada (remember, this was '65) my mum was delighted to go out and get...a blue shiny, mod Christmas tree!

I used to love going to my girlfriend's house for all their decorations and traditions.

The English custom I miss? Homemade plum puddin' with Birds' Custard poured over. Yum!
