This Ain't Your B-Baller Sonics

I was totally jazzed to see Tacoma's own, mid-sixties pre-punk, hipster, garage rock band, The Sonics featured on the front page of The News Tribune. Original Gritizens, this band was one of the originators of the that Pacific Northwest sound that swept the nation and the world (other bands of note in that era were the The Kingsmen and The Wailers) and is often credited as the granddaddies of the Seattle music explosion of the 80's and 90's (often referred to as "Grunge" which I personally cannot stand). But so it goes.

Here's their version of Louie Louie. Personally, I prefer The Witch and Psycho but I don't want to freak out the 'hood too much (hee, hee). And while I still may freak you out, it's a good thing. Sit back, watch, and rock with this classic. Groovy!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Kim. It's awesome that a young one such as yourself is keeping alive the musical history of the area. The Pacific NW has contributed much to American music. Great post.

Thank you!

I have made it a point to study music history, development, and creation for many eras. I find it positively fascinating. The 60's was positively amazing!

I did put "The Witch" on Gritty City Woman. It's got such a lean, spare, modern sound--fab!

That it is! If any readers are unfamiliar with the NW sound from the '60s you're missing something!

fTNT article today says the Soncis will appear at the Paramount on Halloween! Tickets go on sale at 11 AM tomorrow and range in price from $28 to $62.

Stephanie, thanks for mentioning the specifics. Yeah, they will be here 10/31 (spooky, groovy, sweet).

I heard a rumor. Okay, X generation, hang on. I heard that Mudhoney and possible former Soundgarden players MAY be part of the ticket.

If this is true, hey, seeing Mudhoney would be a jewel, along with my fave Gritizens, The Sonics!

I plan to go dressed as a witch, but hey, that's not a stretch for me.

Kim... coooooooooooool... and here's one I would love to keep on talking about it... what is going on inside of us that we need to come together and just shake and bake... I have left many dances, covered with perspiration and feeling just interiorly well knitted together...
there is a need we share to be together and just ... "shake and bake..." what do you think

Oh yeah, Joseph!

I watched a show once about some characters who were very stressed out and had darkness in their lives. The characters appear in a living room where they utter: "when in doubt, dance it out." They had a ball!

Seems like it gives the soul a little rest and a lot of fun!

I remember one old time blues musician's comment about the music... it's all about sex, baby, sex... and I am very pleased there are places and times when we can celebrate our humanity ... IT'S ALL GOOD!!!
