Kudos to the Peninsula School District Administrators

Even with passage of the levy in February, the economy will hit the Peninsula School District hard. Like so many school districts, Peninsula School District will have a deficit of a minimum of $3 million next year and possibly a great deal more. This will mean changes for the 2009-2010 school year. For once the school district isn’t trying to save money on the backs of the support staff alone. While looking at creative alternatives to save money, the administration has stepped up to the plate and will be taking pay cuts rumored to be between 3-5%. Without question there will be certified and classified job losses this summer, but they will be a bit easier to swallow knowing the pain will be shared. Personally, I would be willing to take a cut in hours if it meant someone else keeping some part of a position.
Like families, many school districts will face serious challenges next year.

I hope we can raise some money for "Community In Peninsula Schools" this August 15th. My band will be playing the benefit, to be held at Rosedale Gardens in Gig Harbor. Anything we can do to help, when it comes to the kids, we're there. Local kids' hero, Hugh MacMillan, is a driving force behind this effort. He has "The Kids' Corner" in the Gateway.

This benefit sounds excellent. Stephanie, I appreciate (and applaud) your willingness to self-sacrifice for others if need be.

I have always believed that we are on this big blue marble to help each other. The administration appears to be willing to keep faith with teachers and support staff so it would be nice if we had the chance to support each other, too. I am trying to find out if it will be possible for the staff of a particular school to elect to take a hit across the board or if it will break the Union's contract.

Let's hear it for the teachers and staff and parents who choose to focus on the well being of the children...
